Learn More About Karen Holland

I'm Karen Holland and I am an individual and couples therapist as well as a Certified Brainspotting Therapist.  For years I have specialized in couples counseling and premarital counseling.  I teach couples how to get along, be good friends and lovers and create a marriage for a lifetime.  I work with a variety of marriage and family issues such as infidelity, communication and conflict problems, sex and intimacy issues, parenting, family concerns, interracial relationships, and much more!

In recent years, I have developed an interest and passion working with individuals on being more effective in their relationships and healing deep emotional pain, such as trauma, anxiety and depression.  In individual therapy, I use a powerful brain/body based method called Brainspotting to help people release trauma, ease emotional distress and unleash creativity and mental focus!

My Philosophy

Over the years, I've learned a great deal about what makes therapy effective.  My clients are my best teachers and I've certainly been humbled by all I still don't know.  But here's what I've learned about therapy:

  • I believe that most of us are doing the best we can and have great intentions.  Yet, we are often hijacked by unconscious patterns and wounds that keep us from having the life and love we want.  Thus, sometimes it takes more than "will power" and "positive thinking" to change our lives.  Sometimes we need expert guidance, mentors and groups that can hold us accountable and teach us things.
  • In practicing and studying different therapy approaches, I've learned that for therapy to be effective over time, it is essential to have a trusting, caring relationship with your therapist AND the therapeutic approach has to include mindfulness and brain/body based tools aimed at healing unconscious patterns.
  • Particularly in my work with couples, I have learned how essential it is for both people to take responsibility for who and how they are being in their relationship. The more you focus on changing and blaming your partner, the less likely the relationship will improve and that couples therapy will be helpful.
  • I don't believe I should ever stop growing or learning as a therapist.  There is always something more to heal and understand about myself so I can be better for my clients.  I have always been and always will be committed to my personal and professional growth.

Education and Training

I attended Colorado College and earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology.  I earned a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology/Marriage & Family Therapy from the University of Colorado at Denver and have several hours of post-graduate training in work with individual, couple and family issues. I have studied extensively the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Experiential Couples Therapy.   I have been trained in brain-body based methods such as the Hakomi Method and Integrated Body Therapy.   Most recently I have become a Certified Brainspotting Therapist.
