Learn More About Karen Holland

I have developed an interest and passion working with individuals on being more effective in their relationships and healing deep emotional pain, such as trauma, anxiety and depression.  In individual therapy, I use a powerful brain/body based method called Brainspotting to help people release trauma, ease emotional distress and unleash creativity and mental focus!

I also have a passion for meditation and mindfulness practices and like to teach clients these skills as well as support a regular meditation practice.

I have a special interest in working with clients of color, LGBTQ and individuals in interracial/cultural relationships.

My Philosophy

Over the years, I've learned a great deal about what makes therapy effective.  My clients are my best teachers and I've certainly been humbled by all I still don't know.  But here's what I've learned about therapy:

  • I believe that most of us are doing the best we can and have great intentions.  Yet, we are often hijacked by unconscious patterns and wounds that keep us from having the life and love we want.  Thus, sometimes it takes more than "will power" and "positive thinking" to change our lives.  Sometimes we need expert guidance, mentors and groups that can hold us accountable and teach us things.
  • In practicing and studying different therapy approaches, I've learned that for therapy to be effective over time, it is essential to have a trusting, caring relationship with your therapist AND the therapeutic approach has to include mindfulness and brain/body based tools aimed at healing unconscious patterns.
  • I don't believe I should ever stop growing or learning as a therapist.  There is always something more to heal and understand about myself so I can be better for my clients.  I have always been and always will be committed to my personal and professional growth.

Education and Training

I attended Colorado College and earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology.  I earned a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology/Marriage & Family Therapy from the University of Colorado at Denver and have several hours of post-graduate training in working with trauma, anxiety and depression.  I have been trained in brain-body based methods such as the Hakomi Method and Integrated Body Therapy.   Most recently I have become a Certified Brainspotting Therapist.
